The owners asked us to take a classic tract rambler and remake it especially for a young and growing family. “The forms are fine” they said. However, the look and feel were to be clean and modern yet at the same time inviting in the traditional sense of home. While this mix of traditional structure with modern style is broadly called “transitional” design in the industry, it is also an open realm to employ materials and details in a direct, unfettered way specific to the lifestyles and tastes of the client. The team drew from the Northwest modern idiom, directed by the owner’s preferences for functional clarity and gathering spaces inspired by flow, to achieve a light-filled home ready for diverse moments of discourse and play, quiet study as well as live performance.
